Corvette Assembly Line Workers Are getting Ready To Strike over Jobs being Outsourced

The members of UAW Local 2164, representing the C8 Corvette assembly plant workers, have almost unanimously rejected the manufacturer’s latest contract offer. The sticking point is GM’s reliance on outsourcing a range of jobs to non-union labor. Negotiating better terms for sanitation and health and safety rank among the union’s other stated priorities.

GM’s previous contract with Local 2164 expired two years ago, and although a strike isn’t imminent its members have already approved one if negotiations with GM disintegrate.

GM responded by saying, “We are disappointed that UAW Local 2164 voted down the local contract. We will continue to meet with the local union to understand the vote and will continue to negotiate. Our goal is to reach an agreement that benefits employees and positions our business to be competitive as we move forward.”

I purchased my first Corvette, a 1973 L-82 convertible, in 1987. My first visit was to Corvette Mike and that was when I first met Chad. During the past 31 years, no one worked on my Vette other than Corvette Mike! In 2010, he completely rebuilt the engine, transmission and suspension. I then acquired my current Vette, a 2009 ZR1. And, like my ’73, nobody touches my ZR1 other than Corvette Mike!
