Junior High Angst<\/p>\n
In 1963 Dad owned a 1960 white Corvette with a removable hard top. One summer weekend when I returned home from work on a Saturday afternoon, the Corvette was parked in the garage, my parents were away for the weekend, and my girlfriend was at the local root beer drive-in. I dared not even back the Corvette down the driveway and back into the garage due to overly nosy neighbors, let alone drive it anywhere!<\/p>\n
There was a knock at our front door. One of Dad\u2019s friends stopped to visit with Dad. I said he was not at home. Dad\u2019s friend said, \u201cWhy is the Corvette still parked in the garage?\u201d I said, \u201cDad wouldn\u2019t like me driving his car.\u201d The friend responded, \u201cJohn wouldn\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n
Just that quick I took Dad\u2019s car keys and rushed to the garage. Forgetting about the neighbors, I backed the Corvette from the garage and drove to see my girlfriend. When I asked if she wanted to go for a ride in Dad\u2019s Vette, she said, \u201cYou don\u2019t have it!\u201d I responded, \u201cYes I do!\u201d We cruised our town\u2019s 4th street. I would worry about Dad\u2019s reaction later.<\/p>\n
Dad\u2019s reaction: \u201cJust don\u2019t leave the car on empty.\u201d That was it! I never abused the privilege of driving Dad\u2019s Corvette. I grew to love Corvettes! I now own three!<\/p>\n
