The Quail Postwar Sports Car Class (1961–1975)

We are thrilled to have showcased an extraordinary piece of automotive history at The Quail this year: a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray L89. This Corvette is not just rare; it’s one of the rarest C2 Stingrays ever produced. Out of the few Corvettes built with the coveted RPO L89 option—featuring aluminum cylinder heads on the L71 427 cu-in V-8—only 16 were ever made.

With a conservative rating of 435 horsepower, this L89 Stingray represents the pinnacle of performance for its era. What makes this particular car even more special is its California specification, reportedly one of only two L89 Corvettes equipped with factory smog equipment.

Recently acquired by Corvette Mike, this stunning example is now back in its rightful place in the Golden State, where it continues to impress and inspire Corvette enthusiasts and collectors alike.

We are honored to have had the opportunity to share this incredible vehicle with fellow automotive aficionados at The Quail.

Jack K’s 1995
This is my 1995 C4 that I recently purchased as my 80th birthday present to myself. Guess I am having a late late mid-life crisis. Retired from the Navy after 30 years in 1995 so I guess this model year was appropriate.

The absolutely spectacular ’68 presented here is one of the most correct examples you’ll ever see for sale! Not only has it been meticulously frame-off restored, but it also happens to have its original, C.C.A.S. certified engine still under the hood! This is almost unheard of with L88’s as most were raced hard and put away wet (and broken). Add to the equation the factory documentation, which includes Window Sticker and Protect-O-Plate, PDI, original title, C.C.A.S. engine pad and Trim Tag certification, featured magazine articles, and you’ve got an ultra-collectible Corvette that was at the panicle of performance, in the era of the muscle car wars!

1969 427/400 4-Speed Coupe!

All original L68 with 13,780 Miles!

Fathom Green w/Black Interior, L68 427/400hp, 4-Speed Manual

The original owner and his buddy both purchased brand-new Corvette’s upon their return from Vietnam in ’69. Together they would cruise in their cars
around the St. Paul area. Sometime in 1970, a tragedy occurred, when his buddy was killed in an accident in his Corvette. After that, the original owner of this car lost interest and rarely drove it again. By 1974, the Corvette was put into storage and not driven again until it was purchased by its second owner.

The paperwork on this Shark is amazing, with service receipts all the way back to ’69! We even found a gas receipt from ’71 stuffed into the map pocket!

This Corvette is a true time capsule and a great running and driving car!

One Off-Lister Inspired, Corvette Powered,
Hand Fabricated Alloy Bodied,
1956 Sports Racer

Amazing, handcrafted, alloy bodied racer!

Dark Blue w/Red interior, 265ci dual qual V8, 4-speed

This unique, custom-built sports racer features an aluminum body mounted on a 1956 Chevrolet Corvette frame and running gear. Originally registered in Pennsylvania in 1961 as a “Lister Chevrolet” with a Special Number Plate, it now carries a California title using the 1956 Corvette VIN stamped on the frame. The Pennsylvania brass tag remains affixed to the firewall.

This one-off body, constructed by a craftsman builder from circa 1961, includes a tubular frame substructure and roll bar. It is presumed to have been used for hill climbs or amateur racing, though limited research has not confirmed its race history. The car was acquired by its owner in 2017. And at that time was in bare metal. The ownership history is documented since 1983. The previous owner enlisted Panel Crafters (Joe Stafford) of New Hampshire to restore the aluminum body and sourced a period-correct engine block, heads, intake, and dual carburetors. At that time, the car was powered by a Buick nailhead engine, paired with a 3-speed Ford truck transmission.

Under its owner’s guidance, a professional restoration by Dog House Restorations of Watsonville, CA, commenced in May 2021 and spanned over three years. Major work included re-restoring and painting the aluminum body, installing a later model Muncie 4-speed transmission, a new wiring harness, converting the front suspension to a Martz bolt-in subframe with disc brakes and rack and pinion steering, and adding a custom 20-gallon fuel tank and fuel system. Additional modifications comprised a custom grille, subtle body modifications, a new exhaust system, a full set of Smith gauges, Halibrand-style 5-bolt wheels with period-correct tires, new master cylinders, and rear drum brake systems, a cut-down windshield, a Mercedes-style hood locking system, aircraft-style flooring mat, vintage-style Porsche rearview mirror, and a fully custom leather interior.

The car comes with extensive documentation dating back Decades, including four binders of recent restoration photos and receipts. Notably, this car is the 2023 Quail Motorsports Gathering Custom Coachwork Category Winner!
