1958 Corvette XP700

The Corvette XP-700, designed by GM styling head Bill Mitchell in 1958, began as a stock 1958 Corvette and was intended as Mitchell’s personal vehicle. It utilized standard Corvette components like the frame, engine, and chassis, but featured an extensively redesigned fiberglass body with a sleek ‘grand prix’ look, including a long front overhang, exposed front area, wire wheels with racing hubs, and large air scoops.

Initially, the XP-700 was a one-off concept car but became a prototype featuring subtle body modifications and a Grand Prix-inspired design. It officially debuted in 1960, showcasing an exotic bubble-shaped laminated plastic canopy with vaporized aluminum coating to block sunlight and louvered vents for air circulation. The car also had an overhead mirror with a viewing porthole in the roof.

Powered by a Chevy 283 CI 230 horsepower V8 engine and a 4-speed manual transmission, the XP-700 had a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel drive setup. It influenced the styling of the second-generation Corvette models with its sculpted rear deck design. Originally painted red and used by Mitchell, the XP-700 was updated in 1959 with a longer oval grille and metallic silver paint, becoming a show car.

Other features included Dayton wire wheels, Lucas ‘Flame Thrower’ headlamps, and various air cooling ducts. It was reported that the main reason the XP-700 concept disappeared is because the chassis was later repurposed for the XP-755 and then the 1961 Mako Shark.

My dad (his name was Mike also) always loved Corvettes. We had the black 69 convertible when I was younger. I would sit on the center console and my mom would hold my sister (she was a baby) and we would go for a drive on Sundays. I still remember those side pipes!! The 72 came after the 69, then my youngest sister was born. They sold the 72 and was without a Vette for quite a while. Fast forward to 1999, all us kids were grown, and they bought the red 96. Dad was so proud!!! I was always a ”Ford guy”, had quite a few older Thunderbirds and a Mustang and would go to car shows/cruise ins with mom and dad. He eventually traded up to the silver C6 and then the current 2010 C6. The best time we ever had together was on the track at Bowling Green for Vettes and Vets!! We lost dad February 2nd to cancer. I am now the caretaker for HIS Vette. He loved Corvettes and was a lifetime member of the National Corvette Museum and loved visiting there. We live less the 2 hours away. My dad was a Corvette Mike also!! Thanks for letting me share dad’s story!!

The engine is the correct #’s matching L68 427 cu/in 400hp big block.

This car was shown for the first time in August of 2014, where it received the N.C.R.S. Top Flight Award (Blue Ribbon). And equally important, it qualified to be judged as an unrestored Corvette at the 2015 National meet in Denver that July, where it received two stars out of a possible 4-Star Bow-Tie Award. The car was judged to be original in all four categories.

The car was purchased from the original owner in St. Paul MN. back in ’07 by a collector client of ours. And we just acquired it from our client (the car’s second owner). And as with many vintage Corvettes, this particular ’69 has an interesting story behind it.

The ’61 now at auction is a very original example that has been nicely maintained over the decades. It’s had one repaint in Black, with some minor spruce up of the interior. I decided to call Mike’s to get some views on problems with a 1966 C2 fitting in some CA wheels and Coker tires. I knew there were issues with the rear suspension but I didn’t have the time or specific knowledge to deal with these on my own. Spoke with Chad, he assisted with arranging a tow service as I was 60+ miles away and didn’t trust the car to go the distance. After review he sent me photos and we discussed the situation, it took 6 weeks and numerous photos and calls but I took delivery today and drove the car home, testing it up to 95 and the car ran true and smooth. Chad was very knowledgeable, helpful, and I believe honest. I expect I will be going to them for as long as I own this car.

An annoying problem with the air conditioning plagued my 2001 Corvette. The air got cold, but would not come out the vents (Same for heat!). i had bought my Vette at Corvette Mikes almost 10 years ago, but had not been in in a long time. Service writer gave me an appointment time, and the car was ready at the end of the day and fixed. The cost was much less than I expected and the car was even washed when i picked it up!
