GM Scaling Back On EV Plans

It is being reported that General Motors, like other carmakers, is scaling back some of its ambitious electric vehicle (EV) plans due to lower-than-expected customer demand.

The latest delay involves GM’s St. Catharines plant in Ontario, Canada, which was set to produce over 400,000 EV drive units annually. This shift was intended to transition the plant from manufacturing the profitable Gen 5 V8 engines and dual-clutch transmissions (DCT) used in the C8 Corvette.

However, according to The St. Catharines Standard, these plans have been postponed due to slower-than-anticipated growth in EV demand. Despite the delay, GM assures that the transition to EV production at St. Catharines is still in progress.

Natalie Nankil, GM Canada’s director of corporate and internal communications, stated, “Work continues to retool the V-6 engine and 6-speed transmission lines at St. Catharines Propulsion Plant to make way for EV drive units and we are assessing the timing for that transition. We will continue with our long-standing strategy of building to demand for our propulsion technologies.”

This decision follows Ford’s April announcement of a two-year delay in producing a new electric SUV at its Oakville, Ontario plant, now expected in 2027 instead of 2025. Additionally, Ford’s Blue Oval City plant in Tennessee is set to start operations in 2026, a year later than originally planned.

These delays coincide with a JD Power survey reported by the Canadian press, which found that only 11 percent of respondents were “very likely” to purchase an EV as their next vehicle, a three percent decrease from the previous year. Furthermore, Statistics Canada noted a decline of nearly 5,000 zero-emission vehicle registrations in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the third quarter.

Michael K.

I currently own 4 Corvettes, my mom & dad have had corvettes before they were married & I have been fortunate enough to have lived the Corvette dream for my entire life.

First memory of a Corvette….. dad’s newest Corvette in 1972. The back window was removable & the light bulb status indicators on the center console were a fascination to me.
